Biological Chemistry Seminar/ Lauren Zeitels Memorial Lecture: Dr. Rachel Bernstein (Science | AAAS)

Title: Navigate your scientific career with intention and resilience
Apr 16, 2025 at - | Carolyn Hoff Lynch Lecture Hall

Abstract: Each scientist’s personal and professional journey is unique. But there are some common questions that often arise along the way. Do I belong in academia? What should my next step be? How do I manage a difficult relationship with a supervisor or colleague? How can I maintain my mental health? The list goes on—and there are rarely easy answers. But addressing them head-on is an important step, both for the individual researchers navigating their own trajectory and for the scientific community as a whole. In this talk, I will share my own journey from research to science communication and discuss strategies for addressing and overcoming challenges and hurdles you encounter on your path, wherever it may lead.

Biography: Rachel is a Science deputy news editor focusing on careers and community. Her coverage areas include professional development; publishing; diversity, equity, and inclusion; and other topics relevant to the academic workforce. She also oversees the Working Life personal essay series, which highlights individual scientists’ stories to address broader systemic issues. She has been writing and editing for Science and Science Careers since 2014. Prior to joining AAAS, she co-authored a synthetic biology textbook, was an editor at PLOS, and earned a Ph.D. in biophysical chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, among other work. She was a graduate of Penn's Molecular Life Sciences Program in 2005.
