C3-Symmetric tripodal molecules that feature a central donor atom have long been used to afford atranes, i.e.molecules in which two bridgehead atoms are joined by three three-atom linkers that result in a tricyclic motif. The majority of atranes, however, feature a linker that is an L-type donor (e.g. N) and so we have focused on the application of ligands that incorporate a central X-type donor carbon atom, thereby affording metallacarbatranes. This ligand platform has allowed the synthesis of main group metal compounds that exhibit interesting structures and reactivity. For example, zinc and magnesium metallacarbatranes have been employed as catalysts for the reduction of CO2.
