" Antibiotic Biosynthesis by Pathogenic Bacteria"
Abstract
Pathogenic bacteria produce antibiotics to compete and interact with other microbes. I will discuss how we identify unusual antibiotics from pathogenic bacteria and how we decipher the chemical transformations in the biosynthesis of these antibiotics. I will focus on the discovery and biosynthesis of a nonproteinogenic amino acid and a copper-containing antibiotic produced by the opportunistic human pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This work uncovers new enzyme-catalyzed chemistry and sheds light on the complex chemical interactions between pathogens and other microbes.
