The chemistry of actinide elements continues to be a flourishing field of active research. This talk will focus on work from several areas of our current research in this area of the periodic table.

While a major focus has been nuclear fuel applications, the large size, oxidation state accessibility, and 5f-orbital availability in the actinides have distinguished their coordination chemistry from that of other metals in the periodic table. I will describe recent results from our laboratory concerning the synthesis and reactivity of actinide complexes incorporating a variety of unusual ligands.

We recently began an investigation into new precursors to actinides materials, focusing on oxides and nitrides. This work has resulted in the synthesis of a range of new molecular species incorporating new supporting ligand systems that show promise as candidates for single-source precursors to novel solid-state materials.
