"Measurements of Trace Levels of Actinides in Environmental Samples"
Measurements of low levels of actinides in environmental samples can provide information about nearby anthropogenic activities and past releases. This talk will describe methods used in our laboratory for the determination of plutonium, neptunium, and americium in environmental soil and sediment samples. The methods have been used to measure actinide concentrations in several environmental matrix standard reference materials available from NIST, including SRM 4357 (Ocean Sediment Radioactivity Standard). Several unusual sample types, including lichens and rusty metal, will also be discussed.
