Exploring mechanisms of nickel-catalysed reactions
There has been a considerable effort to move away from the use of precious metals in catalysis, and instead use first row transition metals. However, the mechanistic understanding of how first row metals react is quite limited compared to second and third row metals. The knowledge of how second and third row metals react cannot be simply extended to first row metals, as first row metals have weaker bonds to ligands, can be high spin, and have more oxidation states available. We have been exploring the mechanisms of various nickel-catalysed reactions. Our efforts in these areas will be described.
