"Designing Molecules to Mine for Copper at Disease Interfaces"
Abstract:
Both normal and pathogenic cells require a menu of metal nutrients for optimal growth, but also strategies to mitigate toxicity associated with misregulated or excessive levels of metals like Fe, Cu and Zn. Metal supply chains vary depending on cell type, organism type, and local growth conditions. This situation presents opportunities to manipulate cellular metals as a therapeutic strategy across a number of diseases. Here I will present our labs progress in designing small molecules and peptides that leverage unique cellular copper biology associated with infections and other diseases to selectively inhibit growth of pathogenic cells.
