Plasmon Coupling between Colloidal Nanoparticles: From Fundamentals to Applications
Abstract: I will start this talk with a review of the distance dependent plasmon coupling in self-assembled “molecules” of colloidal noble metal nanoparticles. I will outline template and molecule-based self-assembly strategies and explain the working mechanism of the “Plasmon Ruler” in the electromagnetic coupling regime. I will then discuss how this mechanism needs to be corrected in the short separation limit. In this so-called quantum plasmonic regime molecular properties start to provide unique opportunities for modulating plasmonic responses, and coupled plasmons can become quantum state sensors. In the second part of the talk I will review selected applications of plasmon coupling between nanoparticle probes as distance sensor in nanoscale biophysics, cell biology, and virology.
