We are deeply saddened to announce that our friend and colleague Amos B. Smith III, Emeritus Professor of Chemistry, has passed away. Amos received both his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Chemistry from Bucknell University in 1966 and his Ph.D. from The Rockefeller University (with William C. Agostain) in 1972. He joined Penn in 1973 (along with a joint appointment at the Monell Chemical Senses Center). Amos was a mainstay in our organic chemistry division and recently celebrated 50 years of service to Penn. He also served as Department Chair from 1988 to 1996.
